The sketch is a concept of Drawing usually connected with preparatory drawings. Nevertheless, more than classifying a product in an intermediary stage of the process, it depicts the author’s state of mind in the imperative moment of the urge to draw an idea or visualization. Since the 16th century, the description of the attitude that drives the drawing lies on the value that the artist or the public give to the drawings and its visual features, and not on the configuration of his attitude. With this investigation, we aim at contributing to the description of the draughtsman state of mind at the moment of the sketch, through the observation drawing of a given place and its objects as a creative and formal dominant universe. From a review of the historical definitions and its hints regarding the behavior of the draughtsman, and the usual attributes of the sketch, the problem is analyzed based on recent studies about visual perception, the memory engaged in the drawing processes, and the cognitive features associated with the sense of planning and managing of motor skills involved in drawing. The content of this analysis is related with the conceptual features of image production that precede the outline, as well as the different approaches to the sketch in order to limit and unify the definition of the concept. Part of the illustration is the outcome of the interpretation of the exercises performed by students in the scope of the investigation; the other part is the interpretation of drawings from several authors. As a result, this work is expected to deepen the knowledge about the Sketch, intertwining different lines of research and interdisciplinary content, to structure an approach that allows the interpretation of other behavior patterns of the draughtsman. It is also expected to contribute to a more enlightened teaching, as well as for the critical interpretation of the drawings produced within the conceptual scope of this project.
